What do you love most about modeling?

I love been on the runway because walking on the stage makes me feel confident about myself and at the same time I can also express different personalities through the different outfits that I wear.

What was the last shoot you took part in?

My last photo-shoot was for the Vancouver Academy of Art and Design’s catalogue.

What do you like to do when you’re not modeling?

I like to blog through other models' works which may include photo-shoots or runway shows to gain more knowledge. Aside from that I also like to do simple exercises such as walking and jogging.

Who is your favourite model and designer?

My favourite model is Zhang Zilin; she took part in the New Silk Road Model Look contest in 2003 (Zhang is a NSR model).  I love her sweet personality and she always shows her confidence on stage through her smile.  My favourite designer is Alexander McQueen.  I love the edgyness and detailing on all his designs.

What are your favourite foods?

Pastas, fruits and lots of veggies.

Why did you take part in ITM?

I knew modeling was something I wanted to pursue and I wanted to gain more experience in the industry, and I knew that ITM would be able to provide me with the experience I needed.

What was your most memorable ITM experience?

It would have be the training with the directors and everyone I worked with at ITM.  We took part in many different types of training so that we can improve on all areas including our walk, facial expressions and many others.  By the end of the competition, we all saw how much we have grown and improved through our hard work and efforts.

How do you prepare for a show?

1. Get lots of rest the night before
2. Stay hydrated
3. Look through fashion magazines that may be related to my photo-shoot’s theme so I have an idea of what kind of poses to do

What advice do you have for those applying to ITM?

Don’t be afraid to show who you are - PERSONALITY is key.  And lastly, BE CONFIDENT!

ITM 2009 Glamour Model Text to Vote Award Winner

How do you like living in Toronto?

I absolutely love Toronto!  It is such a diverse city with some of Canada’s top artistic talents.  I have an appreciation for their work, and having the chance to work with them is inspiring to me.  I feel so blessed to have the opportunity!

What was the last shoot you took part in?  What is your most memorable job?

My last photo-shoot was for Canadian designer Ruth Weil’s fall collection.  I got to work with YINMIND, a talented photographer from Italy.  Her work is known to be ethereal-looking and dream-like in vision.  What I enjoyed about this shoot was that I got to know each person on set and we all still keep in touch!

My most memorable job however, was when I fell at the end of a runway at a fashion show in Vancouver!  My foot fell asleep when I got on the runway after being in 5-inch heels for the entire day.  I managed to hobble along at first, pretending like everything was okay, but by the end of the runway my foot completely lost it and I bailed!  I heard a gasp in the audience and then somebody stood up and gave me a standing ovation, and then the rest of the spectators did as well!  I managed to get back up and laugh it off, but I still get embarrassed to this day every time I think about it.  Oh, and the best part is that my friend videotaped the whole thing!

What do you love most about being a model?

Everything!  From the cool clothes you get to wear, to all the new friends you get to make, and the unforgettable experiences - the opportunity to travel, it makes growing up a lot more interesting!  I have a passion for the industry and plan to stay in it for a very long time.

What do you like to do when you’re not modeling?

I like to hang out with my friends back home.  We do silly things like light things on fire (always wear safety goggles), go Christmas carolling, cook up whatever we can find in the kitchen and have an epic meal, drive down steep hills, and shoot at targets with BB guns (again with the safety goggles).  I really miss them.

Name your favourite model and designer

Model:  Ai Tominaga (I wish I could pull off her current blonde hair style)
Designer:  Alexander Wang (sexy, edgy, tomboyish)

How do you keep in shape?

I eat nutrient-dense foods,  do cardio in the morning on most days and strength training 3 days a week.  Throughout the day, I eat lean protein and vegetables, and snack on fruit and trail mix. I drink tea and water to stay hydrated, and I try to stay away from refined carbohydrates such as soda, fruit juice, white bread, white pasta, and white rice.  But I’ll never give up a good slice of cake!  When I dine at restaurants, I ask the waiter to substitute rice or fries with salad or steamed vegetables. This isn’t always the case though, it’s still important to enjoy all types of food, but in moderation.  Every ounce of effort does make a huge difference in the long run!

Name your favourite foods

Smoked salmon, sashimi with extra wasabi, sirloin steak (medium rare), broccoli stir-fry and balsamic grilled vegetables.

What is your fashion style?

My personal style is constantly changing.  I try to keep up with the trends by reading fashion blogs and magazines.  Usually I like to wear one crazy piece of clothing like a funky pair of shoes/jacket/ statement necklace, and then tone down the rest of my outfit.  Currently, I am really into sculptural silhouettes, mesh, zippers, studs, pale hues, and BIG polka dots!

Advice for models attending a casting/audition?

It’s important to walk into the room with your high heels on and ready to impress.  Never show up late; it’s crucial to get there on time no matter how short–notice the casting details were given to you.  It always helps to do some research on the designer/client so you know whom you might be working with and their style of work.  This also helps conversation to flow.  It’s also important to know the names of everybody who shot your portfolio, and what publication it was for, along with any funny story attached to the image.  Clients want to hire a model who is confident, charming, and dedicated to their profession.

Try to look your best at every casting!  This means having a good night’s sleep and nixing salty food beforehand so you don’t retain too much water.  When going to a casting, wear something simple and body-conscious so the client can see your shape.  You can spruce it up with a funky jacket or heels, but no jewellery.  Most of the time, clients want to see you with a fresh face, meaning the “no makeup-makeup” look at best.  This means no dark eye shadow or fake lashes!   Always bring your portfolio and comp cards with you.  It’s difficult for clients to book you if they don’t remember which agency you are from. When a casting director likes your look and the way you present yourself, you can re-book projects/jobs from the same client repeatedly!
